The Solvay Spirit – How One Industrialist’s Dream Brought About The Quantum Revolution

What started as a translation commission ended up in a complete reworking and rewriting of what amounts to an in-depth social history of quantum physics, told through the lens of the Solvay Conferences. Co-written with a Belgian PhD student, this is my first non-cycling full-length publication and it is scheduled to be published by World Scientific in October 2026.

By 1927, the pivotal fifth instalment of these recurring meetings had laid the theoretical foundations of modern technology, influencing innovation in all areas of contemporary living.

The progression of quantum mechanics reflects a complex intellectual pursuit spanning decades, propelled by the likes of Einstein, Rutherford, Bohr, Heisenberg, Schrödinger and Oppenheimer. This revolution, however, did not occur in isolation; its progress was due to a deliberate process, advancing in intimate settings, notably the lecture halls, gardens, hotel lobbies, and dining rooms of Brussels during these historic Solvay Conferences.

Drawing from personal correspondence, recently discovered archives, and the enduring impact of a global dynasty, The Solvay Spirit examines how one man’s vision coaxed a litany of Nobel Prize-winning achievements from some of the most brilliant scientific minds of the twentieth century. It traces the remarkable quantum journey from personal insight to heated debates, from sophisticated equipment to fundamental concepts, highlighting the profound influence of Solvay’s philanthropy, idealism and dedication to his metaphorical ‘fifth child’.
